MoFPI Schemes Support Food Processing Sector In India

Food Processing

To promote and support the overall development of the food processing sector, the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) has been encouraging the establishment and expansion of related infrastructure through two Central Sector schemes—Pradhan Mantri Kisan SAMPADA Yojana (PMKSY) and Production Linked Incentive Scheme for Food Processing Industry (PLISFPI). In addition, a Centrally Sponsored scheme, PM Formalization of Micro Food Processing Enterprises Scheme (PMFME), is also being implemented by MoFPI. All three schemes are demand-driven and are operational across the country.

Under PMKSY, financial assistance is provided to entrepreneurs for setting up food processing industries. The scheme is operational up to 2025–26, with a total outlay of ₹6,520 crore for the 15th Finance Commission cycle. As of 31 December 2025, MoFPI has approved 1,607 projects nationwide under this scheme.

PLISFPI is designed, among other objectives, to support the creation of global food manufacturing champions and promote Indian food brands in international markets. The scheme is operational from 2021–22 to 2026–27, with an outlay of ₹10,900 crore. As of 31 December 2025, 170 proposals have been approved across the country under this scheme.

Under the PMFME scheme, financial, technical, and business support is provided for the establishment and upgradation of micro food processing enterprises. The scheme is operational up to 2025–26, with an outlay of ₹10,000 crore. As of 31 December 2025, assistance has been approved for 1,72,707 micro food processing enterprises nationwide.

Overall, the schemes implemented by MoFPI aim to create modern infrastructure and efficient supply chain management from farm gate to retail outlet, including storage, transportation, and value addition. These initiatives help ensure better returns for farmers, reduce wastage of agricultural produce and post-harvest losses, enhance productivity, and increase the level of food processing.
